The National Portrait Gallery reopens its doors today, following an extensive transformation!
Led by @jamiefobert Architects alongside heritage architects @purcell.architecture (who also worked on the V&A Photography Centre) there has been a complete refurbishment of the Grade l listed building, restoring many historic features and revealing hidden areas, including a Victorian terrazzo floor.
The transformation has increased public space by a fifth, converting office spaces to top-lit galleries. All entrances to the Gallery are now accessible, with step-free access via the new doorways on Ross Place, also where you will find Tracey Emin’s 45 low-relief bronze panels, representing ‘every woman, throughout time’.
The Mildred and Simon Palley Learning Centre is what got me very excited. They have increased the studios from one to three, here you will find The Law Photography Studio, The Art Studio and The Clore Studio where they will hold workshops for both children and adults. The best part is the new ourdoor space with doors opening both sides to The Mildred Garden.
First Look Family Day will be take place this Saturday 24th June and 1st July 2023. There’s so much going on, check website for more.
Supported by @bankofamerica, NPG is also offering £5 tickets for under 30’s to their paid exhibitions and First Look events.
